The Short Answer

A Framer website costs between $0 and $99 if you start from a template, or between $1,000 and $35,000 if someone builds it for you, with most projects landing in the $2,500 to $15,000 range. That gap is not software, it is labor. The real question is not which is cheaper, it is whether your own time is worth less than the difference.

We sell Framer templates, so the obvious disclosure applies. We also do not really take client work (very rarely), so there is no custom build waiting at the end of this article. That is the whole reason we can give you the honest version.

What You Are Actually Paying For

Every route puts the same site on the internet. What changes is who does the work and who carries the risk:

  • A template buys you the decisions. Layout, spacing, type scale and responsive behavior are already settled. You supply content.

  • A freelancer buys you the decisions plus the execution, shaped around your business rather than a generic one.

  • An agency buys you the decisions, the execution, and the coordination of strategy, copy, brand and support around it.

Nobody is overcharging. You are buying progressively more of someone else's time.

The Real Numbers in 2026

Template prices are ours. Freelancer, studio and agency figures are the ranges being quoted across the Framer market this year:

Route

Typical cost

Time to live

Best for

Free template

$0

A weekend to a week

Testing an idea before spending

Paid template

$39 to $99

A weekend to a week

Most small business and portfolio sites

Template bundle

$149 once

Ongoing

Anyone building more than one site

Freelancer

$1,000 to $20,000

2 to 6 weeks

Custom requirements, real deadlines

Small studio

$3,000 to $35,000

4 to 8 weeks

Brand and build together

Agency

$7,000 to $125,000

2 to 4 months

Large teams, strategy, ongoing support

Framer freelancers commonly charge between $50 and $200 an hour, though most prefer fixed price quotes because scope changes make hourly risky for everyone involved.

The Cost Nobody Counts

Here is the number missing from every article on this subject, including the ones written by people selling templates.

A $99 template is not a $99 website. It is $99 plus however long you spend replacing content, sourcing images, writing copy and fixing the two sections that do not quite fit your business. Call it 20 to 40 hours honestly.

If your time is genuinely free, a template wins by an enormous margin. If you bill clients at $80 an hour, that same site cost you $1,600 to $3,200 in opportunity, which is freelancer territory. Both answers are legitimate. Pick the one that matches your actual situation rather than the one that feels cheaper.

Where Templates Actually Win

Templates are strongest when the problem is a blank canvas rather than a specification. A portfolio, a small business site, a launch page, a documentation site. These are solved problems, and paying someone thousands to solve them again is difficult to justify.

They are also the fastest way to find out whether you needed the site at all. Shipping something in a weekend and learning nobody visits it is a cheaper lesson than learning it after a four month build. Our own Framer templates exist for exactly that first case.

Where a Freelancer is Worth It

When the site has requirements a template cannot know about. Complex CMS relationships, integrations with tools you already run, an unusual booking or checkout flow, accessibility obligations, or a brand system that already exists and has to be followed precisely.

Also when the deadline is real and yours is not the only job you have. Paying someone to absorb the schedule risk is often the entire value of the transaction.

When an Agency Makes Sense

When the website is one deliverable inside a larger piece of work. Positioning, messaging, brand identity, photography, ongoing optimization. If you need four of those things, hiring four freelancers and coordinating them yourself usually costs more than an agency, not less.

If all you need is a website, an agency is the most expensive way to buy one.

Which One Should You Pick?

Start with a template if you have more time than budget, the site is a known type, and nothing about your business demands a bespoke structure.

Hire a freelancer if your time is billable, the deadline matters, or you have requirements a template cannot anticipate.

Hire an agency if the website is the smallest part of what you actually need.

One thing worth adding to whichever you choose: the Framer subscription sits on top of all of it. Hosting and a custom domain come from your plan, not from the template or the invoice. We cover that separately in our piece on whether Framer's pricing is worth it.

How much does a Framer website cost in 2026?

Most professional Framer sites land between $2,500 and $15,000 when someone else builds them, though quotes run from around $1,000 for a small freelance job upward. Starting from a template puts you between $0 and $99 plus your own time.

Is a template cheaper than hiring a freelancer?
icon

Almost always in cash, not always in total. A $99 template plus 40 hours of your time is only cheaper if your time is genuinely free. If you bill clients, price both before deciding.

Do I still pay Framer on top of a template?
icon

Yes. A template is a one time purchase, but hosting and a custom domain come from your Framer plan. Budget for both rather than treating the template price as the total.

What does a Framer freelancer charge per hour?
icon

Commonly between $50 and $200 an hour depending on experience and location. Most prefer fixed price quotes, because scope changes make hourly arrangements risky for both sides.

When is an agency actually worth the money?
icon

When the website is one part of a bigger job that includes strategy, brand, copy and ongoing support. If all you need is a website, an agency is the most expensive way to buy one.
